2023 – first edition

In 2023, we announced our first SCTA Next Gen Sustainability Contest. The aim of our contest was to support existing and new initiatives that sought to safeguard the future of coffee.

Through sponsorship from SCTA and a range of other coffee industry players such as UCC,Tchibo, JDE Peet’s, Vidya Global, Louis Dreyfus Company, Sucafina, Hamburg Coffee Company, Touton SA and Enveritas, we were able to raise CHF 21,250 in prize money.

Following a call for proposals, we received 30 applications. The Council and representatives from the sponsor companies then selected the three finalists:

  • TechnoServe with –CAFEProject Peru: Training of young baristas among coffee-growing households”;
  • PROTEEN with “Circular Coffee Waste: Harnessing the power of insects to produce a ‘supercharged fertiliser’ at coffee washing stations;
  • Sucafina Indonesia with “Grounds for Growth”: Empowering farmers through sustainable coffee waste management.

The finalists were invited to pitch live on-stage in Basel at the 14th SCTA Forum & Dinner – you can check out their pitches here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2ZNkgKZEyw&t=8s

Attendees of the 14thSCTA Forum & Dinner were invited to vote for their favourite initiatives on the SCTA Connectapp. The winner was announced during the SCTA Coffee Dinner on Friday evening – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfcnMjpZuaQ

We are delighted to announce that PROTEEN’s project “Circular Coffee Waste was the winner of our first SCTA Next Gen Sustainability Contest.

Once again, we thank all the applicants and especially to our finalists who joined us in Basel for their final pitches Dineshbabu Velumany of Sucafina & Sergio López Zapata of TechnoServe, as well as all our sponsors.

We are already looking forward to our second Sustainability Contest in 2024 – watch this space for more updates.
