Nicolas A. Tamari

SCTA President

Welcome by President

On behalf of the SCTA board I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you to join us for the 2ndconsecutive virtual event amid the continued covid pandemic.

The theme of the conference “Together Toward Tomorrow – The Decisive Decade” is building on last year’s successful event. The panel discussions around the ‘decisive decade’ will address some of the pressing challenges of climate change, adaption of producing methods, ensuring producer livelihoods, and how consuming habits changed during covid times. The challenges of the current coffee market price volatility, crop damage in Brazil after the frost events and the logistical bottlenecks from scarcity of containers and vessels to port capacities and inland transportation will be addressed in several of the panel discussions.

Given the relevance for a sector transformation, we will have two panel discussions on sustainability. Senior sustainability managers will discuss the learnings from sustainability efforts in coffee but also what we can learn from other sectors.

The “big picture” sustainability debate will bring together the insights and learnings from the producer perspective, the global ICO taskforce and from the Swiss government perspective on how the sector can drive public/private partnerships forward. The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO and SCTA are working closely together to foster those partnerships to drive measurable and lasting impact for the producer communities. The associations will discuss relevant topics of the coffee industry and how close collaboration can add value to the members. Cooperation with producing country associations is critical to drive local implementation and create awareness.

Our SCTA NEXT GENERATION TEAM choose the topic of “Will education drive retention of talent in the coffee sector?” – panelists will discuss this topic from a producer, roaster and academic perspective. I do encourage you to sign up for our SCTA virtual event as of Sep 1 on the sc-ta.ch website. The registration and participation is free of charge and is made possible due to the support of our sponsors.

During the active panel discussions, you will be able to ask questions via the chat function and we wish to make this as interactive as possible. Look out also for specific events organized by our sponsors during the breaks and the information provided on the website and SCTA Connect APP.

A special thanks also to all our sponsors helping the SCTA social committee to organize this event during these difficult times and turning this virtual event again into an opportunity to stay connected as a global coffee community. We hope to meet on October 13/14, 2022 in person during the SCTA Forum and Dinner event in Basel.
